For example, tonight (10:45 pm) I pulled up to the gas pump in a car with no plates.
Hit the pay inside button on the pump, a few seconds later a voice said "go ahead on pump 1".
No prepay, no credit card, no plates, no problem.
I have lived here 15+ years. Edge of town, 2 miles from Walmart, a mile off the highway, so there are plenty of people around, yet I can still count on 1 hand, the number of times I have seen a police vehicle drive by the house.
I've been hearing gun shots all month, and never once did I think anything was wrong.
Last month, a neighbor's dog came around.
I walked him 3/4 mile home, took off his "invisible fence collar", and threw it halfway up the driveway.
The dog ran up the drive to the house, and laid down on the porch. The neighbor waved.
The neighbor to the west, burns only good hardwood in his fireplace.
THe neighbor to the south, burns a mixture of scavenged pallets, scrap lumber, and mixed trimmings from his yard, in his outdoor furnace.
The neighbor to the east, burns mostly pine and popple from his woods, in his outdoor furnace.
So I can pretty much tell with way the wind is blowing by cracking a window or stepping into the porch.
