We have a lot of shallow salt water here and every motor you see has the paint rubbed off the skeg from dragging through sand and they obviously suck up some sand through the cooling system. As long as it's not a prolonged situation, no one pays much attention to it other than regular maintenance. What this means in Illinois, I'm not sure as I don't know what kind of bottoms you have in river, lake or whatever.
