i have a ns70a nissan engine backfiring

i have a ns70a nissan motor and it is backfiring when i try to start it up and i noticed some smoke coming from under the fly wheel can anyone give me some info on why this is happening.

Check the key on the flywheel...it may have sheared and put your timimg off.

i had a friend tell me the same thing but he wasnt sure. is this part hard to replace?

Usually not, but you need to get a "puller" such as a harmonic balancer puller available at auto parts stores. Make sure you use "Grade 8" hardened bolts. Metric bolts will usually use some type of symbol to show hardness.

Also, upon replacing the flywheel, it must be torqued to specs!!

There are only two things that will cause a backfire on that model. Either a sheared flywheel key or a bad trigger coil.

GURU im not familiar with boat motors so can you tell me where the trigger coil is located.

thanks for all the info guys but i found my problem,wires were touching motor and melted plastic so they were shorting out. taped wires and motor fired up on first try,glad i didnt listento this other mechanic who told me my motor was fried even before he took a look at it. so thanks again and it good to know you can get some helpful info from people you have never come in contact with.
