Hi all ,

This weekend i stripped the paint off my 1955 15hp Evinrude brought it right down to bare Aluminum applied self etching primer to it the a filling primer ,all on separate days , so this evening i decided to give the motor cover a coat of what i tought was a close to original paint match and its way off. So what i would like to know is do i have to strip it down to bare metal again or can i just sand it down a bit and apply another color. Any and all help would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Depends on the paint and primer. I would at least sand off the color coat if you are using different types of paint. If the paints are the same, rough up the color coat and go over it. Rick

If I recall correctly, Duplicolor light blue metallic in a spray can is a pretty close match. If you're hard to please, then get the real original color from Peter McDowell in Canada at nymarine.ca

It is not cheap but is good stuff and is the right color. Original decals of good quality as well.

You should be able to just scuff it up, since you are this far I woudl just use a Scotch brite pad to scuff, we do that all the time at the body shop, all you need is something for the new paint to grip.

I used the Dupli color on mine and it is really close match, got it at Auto zone.

I would go with a different brand clear if you are clearing, didn't care for the dupli color kind, sort of a matte finish, I used actual auto clear on mine.
