Oshkosh - Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken said today he truly believed that no one was above the law - not even the sheriff.

He wrote himself a ticket last month after he was involved in an accident in the Village of Howard, outside Green Bay.

Kocken said the accident occurred after he started following a driver who had sped past him. As he moved into the lane behind her car, his attention was briefly drawn to a snowblower near the edge of the road.

"I was picking up speed," he said, "and wouldn't you know it, she slowed down to turn left, and I hit her." There were no injuries.

Kocken, 52, said he talked to police chiefs, who said he did not deserve a ticket.

"I still didn't feel good about it," he said. "I couldn't sleep that night; it was bothering me."

He cited himself for making an unsafe lane change, and the fine was $160.80. He paid it on today, he said.

And what about the driver of the other car? She got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt.

I wish I could say I would do the same thing. I would like to think I would. Not many people like this around, thats for sure..

That sounds goofy. He must be up for re-election.

Re: I guess no one is above the law

The other night on my way home from work, a little after 11:00 PM, I saw a deputy sheriff parked in the left hand turn lane on a state highway. His lights were off. He must have been hiding in the dark to catch speeders, but what an unsafe way to do it. He could have been clobbered sitting there with his lights off. I wanted to make a citizen's arrest or call in a complaint. If I did, i realize I would have every cop in New York watching my every move to give me a ticket.
Some cops think they are above the law and can do anything they want, even if it is unsafe.

A few weeks ago I watched a cop pull over another cop from another city, who was speeding without his lights on. I nearly pissed myself laughing... :D

Re: I guess no one is above the law

Years ago, when I still lived in Nashville, I was rear-ended by a cop. It was slick out from an ice storm so I was driving my old jeep. I was stopped at a 4-way stop sign and I saw the cop car sliding up behind me in my rearview; I decided to stay stopped a little longer, and sure enough, bam!

The cop jumped out of his car and started yelling at me for not proceeding through the intersection; as straight-faced as possible, I explained how I didn't want to make any sudden moves with the roads being so slick.

I probably deserved a ticket, but what could he have written? I was stopped at a 4-way stop and using caution during unsafe conditions; not to mention a 20-something jackass;)

He should have fought the ticket in court.

There are two types of vehicle a cop won't pull over, Harleys and work trucks. Never heard of a cop pulling over a cop though. LOL

It happens here quite a lot, especially if the officer getting pulled is high-ranking. The deputy boss up here got pulled on a motorway last year when he strayed out of his own area.......85mph in a 70mph limit, ?60 fine and three penalty points on his licence. He was not a happy bunny for a while after that :(
