Knute (the heathen) and I made a fast trip to Florida earlier this month and were met by Knute's brother.

Problem #1: Knute and I arrive at the "resort" after dark and it's raining. We've never been to this resort/campground. We can't locate cabin 8. We drive around the property hoping that Randy will at least turn on the porch light. I rolled down the car window and hollered, "Randy!!" There he stood on the darkened porch. I asked him why he didn't turn the light on and he said the bulb must be burned out. I went to a lamp in the living room area and "stole" a bulb to put in the porch socket. Before I even unscrewed the "burned out" bulb I noticed a pull switch on the light fixture. Yep, I just pulled the chain and the light came on. There was a wall switch on the porch and that was how Randy had attempted to turn the light on.

Problem #2: The next morning we're ready to fish. Randy tells us to release the dock lines as he tries to start the motor. Rrrrrrrr, nothing. He tries again and again but the motor won't start. I ask, "Is the kill switch attached?" Problem #2 solved.

Problem #3: We arrive at out fishing spot and fish for a few hours. We get ready to move and once again Randy can't start the motor. This time it's dead. Nothing happens when he turns the key. He asks me to check the battery connections. I replied, "Is the motor in neutral or in gear?" Yep, he had left the throttle in gear.

I'm starting to feel like a genius around Randy. Oh, he's a retired lawyer that worked for a major oil company.

All these stories involving Knute the Heathen are starting to make me feel inadequate and a tad jealous. My camping and fishing buddies only have boring names like Mark.:(

Thread: I felt like a genius.

Don't worry, it probably won't last long.

You don't really have to be smart to appear smart to others... just surround yourself with people that are dumber than you are.

Tyme - I'm starting to enjoy reading your stuff as much as listening to Garrison Keillor. Might be time to start thinking about a book of short stories.

Case in point?

Re: I felt like a genius.

I just recalled problem #4

After the first day of fishing, Randy asked me to hook up the charger to his trolling motor batteries. I have an on-board charger on my set up and was a little concerned I might screw this up. Batteries in series, so I attached positive to one battery and negative to the second battery. As I was attaching the clips to the batteries I noticed that his battery terminal nuts were just about off the threads on his terminals. These were the nylon locking nuts, not the wing nuts, and they were just about to fall off the posts. That might explain the intermittent operation of the trolling motor.

Please allow me to relate a story I told a group of college teachers while at a campfire party in Tennessee. These "professors" were talking and relating to each other in what I thought was a pompous manner. I eased myself into the conversation and said to them, "I'm about to finish my first novel." They oohed and awed and were lavishing praise on me. That's when I said, "And when I get done reading this one, I might read another one." :D
I sauntered to the other side of the fire before any of them might slap me.

until you said that I was going to suggest you transplant yourself back to Virginia. Now I think you should just stay put. Be a cultural ambassador.

>"I'm about to finish my first novel."

Funny stuff!
I recall being subjected to a group of guys who were engaged in a sort of richard measuring contest, each one trying to top the other on the level of their financial success. I couldn't resist mentioning that I was currently working on my third million. After the various sounds of admiration died down I added, yeah, the first two didn't work out so...
