My boat engine is Chrysler outboard 105hp, 1057B8H. A few weeks ago I bought a lower unit from ebay and the owner removed all the screws. so I took all the screws from my old unit and applied them into the Ebay lower unit. After 4 times in the water, it failed to switch the shift, So I tried to mount the screws back to my old unit. To my surprise, the screw in the middle can not inserted back. Some body told me that I should not touch the shift screw. What should I do?

Do a search for "shift arm pivot pin". Lots of info comes up.

Your gonna need to remove the shift shaft cover plate and put the parts back together right.

One chance in a Zillion you'll get it back without taking the gear housing apart. :(

Do you have the step by step detail? it seems that it is difficult to put it back?

No don't have the directions.
Take the bearing carrier out, remove the prop shaft, remove the shift rod cover.
That makes it accessible to reinsert the screw and then mate the yoke(see a parts diagram) with the front of the prop shaft

Use a bit of bearing assy. grease or a mild grease to keep the yoke in place.
Heavy grease will not dissolve like assy. grease.

This mistake has been made many times.----Best take it apart for inspection and proper assembly.

When you have the pivot pin back in place, Fill up that area with a little silicone as a reminder to never remove that screw when draining. I told a friend to never remove it and I'll be dammed, he did. It took me several hours to fix it for him.
