I finally found a starcraft > or = 18' and bought it today. It's a 1991 sfm 190
according to my research, although it's registered in AL as a 1979. The guy
that owned it bought it from a seaman from Ohio. The transom and floors are pretty solid but I'll replace the transom since it was used in brackish water
some. The trailer is the only problem, it's a EZ loader but is almost completely
rusted out. I'll post more on it and some more pics soon. paid $1500.

Awesome! What's the motor? Yeah that trailer looks rough. Great looking hull. Looks like a deep V.

It's got a 1991 90hp mercury 3 cyl. Has good compression 120, 115, 125psi
and it idles down good. The LU oil looked good. It has good spark. T&T work
good. Shifts good. The only problem with the motor I found is it's got a 19p
prop on it and is only getting up to 3500rpms. I found a guy that had this
exact boat/motor combo on walleyecentral and he said a 15p was what his
had and it worked well. The boat's rated for 135hp so a 90hp is on the low
side but she jumped up on plane quickly even with the 19p prop, speed was
32mph per speedo.

I'm like you now EZ, finally have T&T.

I'll definately have to get another trailer, this one looks like it would fall
apart if breathed on heavy. I shouldn't have any problem finding a good
used one, there are plenty of rotten glass boats here in the south.

She's got a very deep v in the bow, I think the transom deadrise is 17degrees
but I'm not sure. It rides good for an aluminum boat in my opinion, much
better than my 16' sylvan.

Congrats Bryan and welcome. Nice looking boat. A little work and maybe a different trailor, and you are ready to head north to Tinstock!:D I dont think I would mess with a prop yet untill you get her set up with gear, ect. Then see what she does. You may need more power vs speed, or the other way around who knows? Get some sleep, I wont come get it ......yet.;)

I hit 39 with my 90 with 3 adults in the boat. Mine is rated for 150. I was surprised it did that well.

Something to keep an eye out for when you're looking for trailers.....fellow starcraft member Coolbikeguy bought a rotted out hulk of a fiberglass boat that was sitting on a gorgeous galvanized trailer for $500. He swapped the good trailer under his Starcraft and his crappy trailer under the glasser. He can part out the glasser and its motor some and probably recoup some of his money. Even not, it was a good price for just the trailer. Just something to look out for when you're scouring CL.

Missed out on a decent trailer today for $150, the guy was selling it when
I called. I'll just keep an eye out for one, there have been alot lately on
CL in my area. Here's some more pics.

Re: I can finally join! 1991 starcraft sfm190 bought today.

I took the boat out tues. I finally got it to crank after troubleshooting for
an hour. The carbs mixture screws were out of adjustment. The throttle
linkage was way and I mean way out of line. After that was fixed the motor
cranked and ran fine. I got the boat up to 35mph Gps don't know what that
would be on the speedo since I severed the tube when I trimmed the motor
all the way down. The tube was routed bad and I knew it would likely happen
eventually. Apparently my tach stops reading above 3200rpm, because
according to a prop calculator I was turning ~5000rpm using 10% slip.
I have to check the timing and probably go ahead and clean the carbs
for safety. I think I can get a few more mph out of her since the motor's
mounted all the way down on the transom through the top holes. I have no
idea how the motor cranked for the previous owner since the throttle pickup
was about 1/2'' from touching, but it cranked right up when I tested it in
Mobile, AL.

Re: I can finally join! 1991 starcraft sfm190 bought today.

I went to look at a trailer/junk i/o boat last night and the owner had a great
collection of boats, he had an interesting 1960's welded aluminum tunnel
hull alumacraft or duracraft or something craft, it looked about 14-15'L
x 4 1/2- 5'W powered by a newer 25hp merc 2stroke. He said it will run
31mph with 2 adults. I was very interested but he said it would be the last
boat he'd sell and he had newer searays and ranger boats among others.
I'm sorry if this is a little off topic and i'll post in a more appropriate section
but does anyone know what manufacturers and what years these type
booats were made? The boat basically looked like a trihull in front and
a modified v from the middle to the transom. The owner said it's the best
riding small aluminum boat he's rode in.

Re: I can finally join! 1991 starcraft sfm190 bought today.

Well I drove to TN yesterday to pickup a 1991 180 searay sitting on a nice
galvanized shorelandr roller trailer. The boat had a non running 1991 mercury
135hp 2.0l v6 with compression 120-125lbs, and working tilt and trim don't
know about the LU but it had a SS merc mirage prop in serviceable condition
on it. The boat has hydraulic steering also. So I pretty much threw the
$750 at her. The lady's daughter had it listed and was slow to respond to
my emails and there weren't much details in the ad or our correspondence.
The motor was rebuilt in the last ~10 years ran great and then started
developing hard starting this summer. Stator was changed, then other
electrical parts. The lady said she spent ~$2000 at the parts changer
mechanic and gave up and went to buy another boat.

The shorelandr should fit under my starcraft and i've been wanting a merc
v6 on an aluminum boat. Hopefully I can get the motor running if not I'll
part it out and probably get more than I paid for everything. I plan on
giving the boat to someone after I strip it of everything I want.

A 19 prop sounds about right to me for that boat.....with a 15 you can get in the barge tow business.
