OK, well I went to the land of make believe and bought one anyway:(

I accidentally clicked the Chevy ad at the bottom so I thought I'd go ahead and build one to the specs that I'd really want. Man what a sweet ride!

Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel
Crew Cab
Long Box
A few other nice features

$58,000:eek::eek:

I went ahead and clicked on the "calculate payment" tab just for the heck of it...

$1,000 per month, every month, for the next 6 years:eek:

My 99' 3/4 ton Burb with 210,000 miles and regular mechanical maintenance ($$) seems just fine for the moment. Back to the land of reality.

58,000 dollars for the absolute worst investment in the world!! a year from now you already lost 15 grand on the thing!

Re: I bought a new truck!

Chevys peaked style-wise in 2006 in my opinion. Not a fan of the new ones although they are growing on me.

I really like the '99-'02s also. http://image.trucktrend.com/f/vehic...rm-tests/9993871/1999-chevrolet-silverado.jpg

I almost bought an '04 last year but they didn't want to give me squat for my '90 despite it being rust-free, newer motor, and 4x4. When we left the dealership my wife told me she didn't really want a truck anyway so that's how we ended up with the Jeep GC which we like quite a bit.

Yah, I think that boats are just barely a worse investment - not by much though.

I hate vehicles. Man, it seems like I just can't win with em. I have owned really old, old, newish, even one brand new one and it seems like I am always dumping money into them. Yes, even the brand stinking new zero miles car I had to pour some money into.

Man that truck up there at $58,000 is insane. I will never, ever be able to afford something like that. I can actually only think two people out all of my friends/family that could (legitimately) afford to spend that kind of money on a vehicle.

Re: I bought a new truck!

Yeah cars suck. We have had a tough time winning with them also. We are putting 25-30k miles per year on our main commuting vehicle. In my mind, that doesn't leave too many options other than brand new with a big extended warranty. With used cars, I've had better luck buying ones with 60-75k miles on them than the 20-40k mile cars. The lower mile ones seem to be beat to hell. I also bought a large warranty on the Grand Cherokee. Was it a good investment? Probably not as it was hella-expensive, but I figure all it would take would be for one of the AWD components or a transmission to go and it would instantly pay for itself.

Re: I bought a new truck!

I hear ya.

I thought about buying a warranty on my brides used Honda Odyssey when I bought it. I passed on it and have huge regrets now that I just coughed up $3400 for a new transmission, $1200 in a new serp belt, brakes and other misc stuff. My Burb just absorbed about $1500 in brakes, radiator, tires. About $1500 last year and another $1500 the year before all in maint costs. Ugh.

At least with these old boats we can rebuild them to just about a nearly new state. Rebuilding old vehicles really isn't the same.

Re: I bought a new truck!

Transportation is not cheap on land or water. I am afraid to buy used unless I know the person who is selling it. But new does not mean trouble free.
My wife was girlfriend at the time ford ranger had a computer, 2 transmissions, and other stuff in the first 30K; I think $10k+ in warranty work. She drove that truck very easy, I was the first one to rev it up to 4500 rpms.
Traded that in on a dodge dakota, loved the truck but gas prices forced me to swap to a New 06 honda cr-v for gas milage. Still have the honda 50k with no trouble.
Traded my 78 bronco in 2001 for a new dodge diesel 01 pickup, 10 years later 55k miles it got a new powersteering pump, vac pump under warranty. Out of warranty new electric fuel pump and rebuild injection pump (to fix a common problem in 01/02) for about $1800 I did the work.
Still the power steering does not work as it should.
It is luck of the draw getting new or used, but one thing is for sure all transportation past and present will cost us plenty of $$$.
Looking forward to fishing this summer

We are way ahead of the curve with our boats over our cars..What kind of peace of mind can you get with a $1,500 car?
Now that same cash in a running tinny....best bang for the buck going
In fact..I have a 18,000 dollar truck towing my 1,500 boat...lol

Yah buddy, not much! Though I think the best car I ever owned (maint., and money wise) was an early 90's Volvo 740 that we paid $1500 for. She went to 450,000 miles before the engine blew up. I put hardly no maintenance $$ into that car, she was a champ!

Mid 80s volvo 240GLT...bright red lego.

Yah Kev, I have heard legends of 1,000,000 mile 240's and 740's. I know while we owned that car I told Jen prolly a hundred times...

Re: I bought a new truck!

I drive a '99 gmc 3/4ton ext cab long bed(6.0l gas) with 314,000+ miles on it every day.

I drive by the local chevy dealer and think man it would be nice to have a truck. Then i start to think about the payment and say this one not so bad she will go another year or ten.

It just hit me that i will have two kids in collage in six years she may need to make it 15years.

Re: I bought a new truck!

meaning no disrespect or anything, but you guys who have bad luck with vehicles need to look for something with the word TOYOTA on the tailgate.....the Taco de Pescado has yet to cost me one cent in unscheduled maint/repairs in 135K despite severe duty and lots of offroad in Mexico

of course, the equiv Tundra to that Chevy wou;ld prolly be $70K :-o

it's all out of my bottom feeder league....i refuse to pay more for any vehicle than for my house, and the latter cost me $42K

Re: I bought a new truck!

I love this Toyota Tundra Double Cab...

2007-Toyota-Tundra-Double-Cab-Black.jpeg

Problem #1 I can't buy a truck with a small box

Problem #2 I can't fit more than 6 people in there

As I see it I only have two options, Burb or Excursion. Oh well.

(Edit: Problem #3 I can't afford it anyway)

I am not going to agree with you on this one. As I have a 99 Ford Superduty F350 with the 7.3 Powerstroke in it with 197,000 miles on it. This truck has cost me nothing in unscheduled maint cost either, and on top of that it gets 23 mpg:D on the highway. I love this truck and so does the wife, in fact I actually thought of trading it in and she said if I did I would have to trade her in as well:eek:. I think she was kidding but not really sure:facepalm:, but I think she said that cause it is paid for. I bought the truck used with low miles on it and it has been a great vehicle. It can sit 6 adults very comfortable and have done so on a 1200 mile round trip. Had a Toyota before this truck and it was nothing but a pain in the but and always something breaking. Have never wanted one since then although the new ones are really nice, just got a lemon I think but still left a sour taste for me.:(

Re: I bought a new truck!

i'm impressed. 23 mpg is awesome for a F350! and i bet you don't even notice the Starcraft is back there. my friend/sailboat partner with an F250 diesel only gets about 18 hwy.

sure not saying that Toys are the only reliable vehicles or that all Toys are perfect, but i sure haven't been able to break mine despite trying. guess there IS something to be said for buying trucks with <120K on them...

it's all still irelevant to me....mine is paid off and i'm not buying another unless it burns to the ground. why spend perfectly good boat/motorcycle $ on mere transportation?

Yea when I live in Idaho I had a couple friends that have the same truck and the best that either could get was 18 as well. Don't know why I get 23 but not going to complain about it in no way. Yea when I drug the Islander home I did not even know it was there, pulled really nice and truck just purrs along. I think the truck looks funny when I have the 15 ft seanymph hooked to it. To much truck for the size of boat.

Well like I said I think I just got a lemon Toy is all. And now that the superduty is paid off I am not going to buy another one unless I have to. I bought a car when diesel was $5 a gallon and now the truck does not get a lot of use, not till the Islander is up and running.

And I agree that I am not going to buy a new one either. Really really bad idea I think, loose to much when you drive them off the lot.
