My lower unit went on my motor so I removed it, and am trying to install a new (used) one.

I set it up in neutral on both the engine and LU per the Mercury manual. I am able to slip it up, turn the motor and get the driveshaft in.

I am having trouble getting the shift shafts lined up. It keeps pushing the shaft up and pinning it on the engine block, even with fiddling to find the spline.
th installing it in reverse and foward with no luck.
I have also played wi

Any ideas? I really cant afford to bring it to a shop. (I am a college student)

1977 70hp Mercury

Thanks!

Re: I am stumped. Lower unit.

The upper shift shaft on the motor was not in quite the same position on the old unit, as the new then installing the new unit have someone move the shift a little to line the two shafts up after installation you will have to adjust the shift a little probably

Mercs have a default fwd when the shifter has prob. I alway tell people to put the gearcase in fwd gear and shift the controller the same ( fwd gear ) makes it easier to get up in there. BTW DON'T FORGET TO GREASE THE UPPER SHAFT SPLINES !!!!!!

Jim, Is the shift guide block installed in the upper? I have the same problem when mine falls onto the lower unit. I need to to stick it into the midsection with some grease or something to hold it. Without it the two shift shafts do not align.
