Here are some shots of my boat.

I've had some tough luck with this boat---my first---partly because of my ignorance, and partly just because it's a boat, I suppose. I discovered a rotten deck last spring, and was discouraged and more than a little daunted by the prospect of repairing it. But with the loss of my job last January, I had some time to invest, so I went at it slowly and carefully, and this is the result:

Tomorrow's Saturday, and the weather's supposed to be beautiful, so the wife and I are going to take 'er out and see if we can scare up some fish. For the first time since we've had this baby (we're going into the fourth season now), I am really looking forward to getting out on the water. I think I'm finally to the point that I can just enjoy being out without being consumed with worry that something's going to go wrong. I can't wait!

Re: I Am READY to go Boating!

Thanks QC.

I guess you noticed I am struggling with the images. I am not used to using the Microsoft Photo Editor, and it's messing me up. Yeah, I know it's real simple---I think that's the problem. I'll get it figured out. Eventually. :D

This boat's a 1990 Sea Ray 180. It was in pretty nice shape when we got it, but I've been spending a lot of time on it, going over all the little things that need attention. I'm afraid if I get it in too nice condition, I won't want to get it wet.

Mmmm...naaah. I'll put it in the water, all right!

Re: I Am READY to go Boating!

I think we're going to try Bridgeport and see if we can get into some crappie or some sand bass. There's a fishing forum I look at, and folks post about where they're catching this and catching that, but a lot of it seems like attempts to solicit business on the part of (maybe) professional guides or someone selling tackle. Whether we catch anything or not, we just wanna get out on the water!

Don't I wish. :( Gotta pay the wife back for all the materials...but she's sending me her bill first, then I'm sending her the bill for my labors and expertise! ;)

Re: I Am READY to go Boating!

I had some photos of the rot, or at least I thought I did, but I seem to have misplaced them. I did locate this one photo of my patch:

As you can see, the rot was not too extensive. When I first discovered it, I thought the worst because we had the deck "replaced" when we bought the boat. I wanted to pass on the boat entirely because of the soft deck, but my wife really liked this one and we were able to get the price waaaaay down. Anyway, I thought I recalled the entire deck aft of the consoles being replaced, but it turned out the guy who did the work left the sections under the two forward seats, and that became obvious when I pulled the carpet up. I would never take the boat back to that guy...not only did he leave me with some rotten deck, but he tried to charge me double what his estimate was when the job was finished by saying that he had not included labor in the estimate.

Anyway, I found that this repair was not so tough. There are some things I would do differently next time, but I think my repair will be good for a few years.
