I am looking to buy 86' Regal with 170HP Merc

I am looking at buying a 86' Regal 195 with a 170HP Mercruiser the boats hull is in good shape and so is the interior. I am just wondering if these 3.7 170HP motors are good motors or if they have problems I know the 3.0 130HP 4 bangers are supposed to be bulletproof, also is there anything I should look for in the motor or drive? The motor was replaced with a jaspar marine motor in 2000 and was last used this august. Thanks for any input!

Pass on it.

I could have a had 3-4 of these for almost free just have to pay for the trailer.

Passed them all up.

Get something in the 18-19 foot range 3.0L volvo, merc.

Do a search here for "merc 470" - plenty to read.

ok i am going to dissagree with the two posts above if the motor is in sound macaincal condition and you like the boat then go for it. Yes these motors mave a bad reputation but as long as they are takin care of they are ok, i have one in my boat that is almost 29 years old and it runs fine it sat for at least 3 years before i got it a little maintnence a we were on our way

The 470 is Mercuiser's Better Idea, that Wasn't,.... 20 Years ago....

Merc's redheaded bastard stepchild,.... Barely 1 step above buying an old OMC Stringer drive.....

from the comment spivy30. i reckon yer getting the idea.... do use the search function though. ya will find out much on these engines here..... some even have something good to say about them. just not many is all.... from the comments here when i was buying a boat. omc's and 470's were off the list. there's better fish in the sea it seems....

How much is the boat?? price can make a huge difference in what you should be willing to put up with in the boat. I wouldn't pay top dollar for a boat that needs things, but lets face it if the price is low and the only problem is an undesirable motor that runs great why not??

I passed on the regal decided to spend a lil more and found a 20' four winns with a alpha 1 and a 305

Only if it's a Classic hull,+ you go into it Planning on a Total Refit....
