i am having trouble looking up my 40 hp outboard. I have serial numbers but no luck

I have found serial number plate on my 40 hp mercury but i can not find them on any reference.
The numbers are 5660078 I have even taken a photo of plate.
Any help will be great.

Hi, I found something in here. I just looked up 40 hp 2 cylinder. It looks like it could be a 1980 or 1981. Your serial number is in the range for those 2 years.

Also, in the stickies at the top of the page, there is one for finding model numbers for motors. Lots of good information in there, especially for harder to find models.
