1984 Evinrude 40 - E40ELCR
15ft aluminum lone star

It’s been about 2 weeks of trying to diag this motor. In the video, it shows the motor struggling to get up to speed, but eventually it’s opens up and the motor purrs like a kitten. Many people have said it’s my prop, the weight of my vessel, or all the weight being in the back. It’s none of those. This 40 hp motor should push my sub 700 lb vessel with no issues whatsoever.

Things I’ve checked/replaced:
•carb rebuild, all new gaskets, been through them twice
• checked reed valves, a slight amount of light was coming through but not significant enough to cause issues
• replaced power pack - no difference
• tested continuity of coil wires
• new champion plugs
• checked WOT timing, right at 19 degrees BTDC
• took flywheel off, and cleaned residue coming from charge coil
• tested resistance for charge coil and stator - I read that 450 +- 75 ohms was for the charge coil and it read 590 ohms - stator read 40 ohms which was right in spec
• air box on / air box off makes no difference
• new fuel lines
• new fuel pump

I know it’s not a fuel issue. I’m starting to lose my mind here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I had to cut the video short to make it fit, but it was at full throttle the whole time and was doing the struggle issue for about 30 seconds before it finally opens up.

Welcome to the forum! The members here are great and should be able to help you. Love your classic old Lonestar boat. Good luck!

i'll let the experts comment but it sounds like misssing fire on the plugs... try doing a run when it is dark to see if you don't have HV jumping all over the place

plug wires may test good but insulation crack would not show up on a ohmmeter .

Right, but judging by the facts that I pulled the wire off with my hand while it was running under load, I’m gonna say no because probably would have shocked me if that was the case.

Get a manual. Have you dine a link and sync?
I haven’t done a link and sync. Where do I find and good manual? I’ve seen about a 100 different websites with manuals, I don’t know what’s legit and what’s not.

Ken Cook publishing. Only a factory manual is worth buying. No Seloc or Clymer

Is the boat new to you? Has it ever run better than it does now? A prop with a pitch that is too high will bog down a motor and take forever to plane and it terrible for your motor. It's like starting a 4 speed manual transmission in 4th gear.
Not sure about anyone else, but I was not able to open the video with any application I have on my laptop.

New to me boat and motor, but picked up separately. Motor has ran like this for as long as I’ve had it. The video shows the engine struggling for about a 1/4 mile distance and eventually wakes up, increases by about 1500 rpms (guessing) and starts running like a top, pushed me 30 mph by myself.

Motor sounds good. Have you tried anything to reduce the porpoising? It seems to take off once the boat stops bouncing in and out of the water.

You’ve got it backwards, it doesn’t start porpoising and bouncing out of the water until the motor picks up and takes off. In this video, it actually had a whale tail on the motor. I’ve since taken it off because it was deteriorating.

Some will argue.-----Simple steps / no money steps to take.------Run with a timing light , one cylinder at a time.----Observe how spark behaves.-----Look into each carburetor with a strong flashlight at full throttle and observe fuel coming up the nozzles.
