Hypoid oil?

Drained the lower unit in my 10hp model 10014 evinrude and was wondering what is the difference between hypoid oil and lower unit marine gear lube if any. Below the vent screw it says to use hypoid. Is it okay to use regular marine lower unit oil? Also, what plugs does this motor take? I think it has AC delco in it now. Wanted to replace for next year.

Thanks guys.

Re: Hypoid oil?

Hypoid oils are made to withstand greater pressures than non-hypoid oils. I recommend talking to your local dealer/mechanic to see what they think.

Re: Hypoid oil?

It says Hypoid because it is an old motor and that's what they used back then. Nowadays, use ordinary Outboard gear lube from Wal-Mart. Hypoid was for automobile rear ends. The word refers to the gear design.

That being a 57, Id assume he'd run the Champion J6C gapped to .030 FR?

That's kinda what I thought too, FR but wasn't completely sure because I haven't paid that much attention to the hypoid v. other oils issue. I have run standard synthetic gear lubes in all my OMCs recently, except for my Johnson 65. Actually, my dealer changed the lube in that one right after I bought it and he probably used OMC's Premium Blend, which I understand is the same as what used to be called "Type C."

Champion J6C at .030 will be fine.

Re: Hypoid oil?

Thanks guys. I will refill with outboard lube and make sure I replace the seals. I fogged the motor yesterday ,sprayed the plug holes and mixed seafoam in the gas/oil to treat and ran in motor. I should be good to go in the spring. Thanks for all the input. :)
