Hello all! This is my first post here at iboats.com. My lower unit has a call out for "hypoid" oil. I drained it last night and need to fill it back up. It was somewhat milky, so I imagine there is a leak somewhere. I need to know exactly which oil to refill with. I have an idea, but I don't want to put any thoughts in your heads! Thanks in advance!

just go pick up some marine grade 85w-90 oil and fill 'er up. You can even get it at walmart in the sporting goods dept.

Thanks man. This is kind of what I thought from what I read, but I don't want to screw things up. Kind of new to the outboard scene.

Hypoid oil is the generic name for extreme pressure rated oil, Marine or regular. It took its name from the use: Rear wheel drive automobile rear ends are underslung on the pinion (for a flatter floor) and require a specially cut gear tooth geometry called a hypoid. The hypoid cut tooth generates quite a bit of pressure on the tooth faces when running. So, the oil used in these rear ends was (is) special and naturally called "Hypoid." It is a blend of oil containing a high degree of sulphur compounds which give it the extreme pressure rating. They also give it the unique smell.

You will also see the same oil marketed as EP(extreme pressure) oil.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I was thinking it meant high pressure, but had no idea what hypoid really meant.

Be sure to put new gaskets under the drain and vent plugs on the foot. Failure to do so almost guarantees water in there.
