I started this year with a 19 pitch prop, put on a hydro foil and my cavitation plate was about 2 inches below the bottom of my boat. I thought the hydrofoil would take care of the front end hopping but it didn't. Top speed for my boat, 79 Starcraft 17ft fiberglass with 100hp johnson, was 35-37mph. In order to achieve that you had to hang on to your teeth from the bouncing! Since reading through this forum I have thrown away the hydrofoil, lifted the engine and have achieved about 45mph and it is a lot smoother. I have also had some other minor problems, but this forum has solved them all. I would like to thank all that were involved!

I don't know that the hydrofoil was junk, but your set-up sure was a problem. That's why most on here advise checking your engine height before going any farther. Hydrofoils have there place, but best to find the real problem first...

With the engine lifted and hydrofoil still on I got about 40mph +/-. I then went one step further and took it off and it sure seemed to make a big difference. Maybe just in my scenerio, but I'm sure pleased

Re: Hydrofoils... Junk?

Raising my motor and removing my hydrofoil helped my boat a lot. The hydrofoil makes my boat handle very poorly (bow stear). After trying many combonations of height, hydrofoil/no hydrofoil, props......... By far the best combo was raised motor, Turbo prop, no hydrofoil (best speed, best hole shot, best handling)! Of course every boat is different...........

I have an older small 16' f/g boat with a 40 dt suzuki finally running well but when I turn it feels like the whole rear end of the boat is washing out behind me. No problem planing but will a hydrofoil help this? Thanks.

Billten. Please start your own thread in the Boat Topics forum. This 6 year old thread is about a Johnson 100 outboard.

You will get more and better response there.
