Will the use of a hydrofoil on my outboard overstress the cavitation plate?

Hey mwelskopf,
I've never heard of it being a problem. What size/make outboard are we dealing with?
Backlash

Re: hydrofoil

From personal experience....yes it does place additional stress on the cav plate.

I actually broke half my cav plate off and was able to find a marine welder to fabricate a new one at the cost of about $300.

The welder said that he sees this happen a lot and the hydrofoil is a direct cause of it. I believe I hit something with mine and felt lucky that it was just the hydrofoil and part of the cav plate that was sacraficed and not the entire drive.

BTW I have a 90hp Force L drive.

What I did is asked the welder to beef up the cav plate to avoid this happening again. I put on another (smaller)hydrofoil as the improved performance was definitely a plus.

Dave
