I am new to boating, just bought 02 Stingray 190ls w/ 4.3l,23p alum prop, and have lots of questions. I was thinking about adding either a SE300 hydrofoil or trim tabs to help with quicker hole shot, planing faster, and porpoising. Any ideas or thoughts? Looking forward to responses.

Re: Hydrofoil vs Trim Tabs

I bought a 192RX cuddy last fall and after the engine blowing up on the first day out and a summer of getting it fixed I finally got it to the lake. My boat had a hydrofoil already installed the first time out with the new engine I could hardly get the boat to plane. I then heard of the nauticus SX Smart tabs (use the 60lb models) and installed them, the second time out she jumped up on plane effortlessly plus no low speed wander (we have a large no wake zone at our lake that required a lot of sawing on the wheel before you could open it up) alone makes it worth the money. Stingray should put Nauticus number in their owners manual or just factory install these things, they are just that great. A 4 blade SS prop will help you with your hole shot to. Just remeber to drop 1" in pitch if you are at WOT now.

Thanks for the info. I have already found the smart tabs at Cabelas for $129, they recommend the sx9510-80bl for 19ft 190 hp. Why do I need to drop one inch pitch on prop? Will it raise the rpm's at WOT?

I spoke with John at Nauticus and he recommended the 60lbs for my 192RX with a 4.3L engine and with the 4 blade prop you will lose a 100 rpm over the 3 blade design and will want to bring your rpm back up.

yeah you want to go with the 60lb actuators at most. I have a 19 foot glastron with a v8 and the 60's are perfect.

Thxs, the install is on my long list of things I want to do to my boat. More ideas than money. One thing at a time. How do you like your glastron? I was looking at them as well, however, the resale value was a little higher in my area than for stingray.

I have the SE Sport 300 on my 190LX -- its a great addition. Go for it! I love mine.

I plane quicker, can hold plane at lower speeds, etc.

I primarily use my boat for water sports, and now run a 23 pitch high 5, so being able to hold speed and plane at 15 MPH is what I need for the kids.

However, even with the stock 23 pitch aluminum prop, its a great addition to the boat. You will get up on plane a lot quicker.

Now if top speed is what you are after, get the tabs. I do not want the table to wash out my wakeboard wake and don't care about top speed.

Thxs for the info, the hydrofoil is an easy and cheap addition. I am not worried so much about top end as I have young kids who like to tube and ski. The lake I boat on can get a little rough so I dont do much over 35-40 at most when crossing the lake. I like the color scheme of your boat, mine is green and white.
