Hello , I have a 1969 evinrude 85 hp model # 85993E that has no reverse or neutral. When I purchased the boat it did not run and I fixed that but reverse never worked. I have changed the gear oil with the correct class c lower unit oil filling from the bottom to the top, checked the voltage all the way down to the solenoid which was consistant with the battery voltage, and have also tried giving it a few good whacks on the side to see if it was stuck. my question now is my next step replacing the solenoid. My local marina has one for $104 in his parts bin. I would also like to thank all of you for this site it has helped alot with other repairs on my boat.

Re: hydro electric shift no reverse or neutral

the motor has to be running for it to shift. there is an oil pump in the lower unit, the solenoids, are just switches that direct the flow of oil, the oil flow is actually what moves the shifter.

Hydro Electric Shift)
(J. Reeves)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Premium Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).
With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

Re: hydro electric shift no reverse or neutral

I forgot to say that I have had the boat in the water and it will not come out of forward gear even right when it first starts. I have checked for power all of the way to the solenoids with a good fluke multimeter and it was consistent with the battery voltage, the lower unit has never shifted out of forward since ive had the boat. It also gets no power to it when the forward button is depressed. I have been out on the river and a couple smaller bodies of water here local and every time it has been in forward regardless of which button was depressed. Since I was getting voltage at the solenoid when the button was depressed for either reverse or neutral I was wondering if the solenoid was bad or if there was something internal that could have failed or become clogged. I know for a fact that it has the correct lube in it because I changed it myself. I was just looking for someone elses opinion before I spent any more money on this thing.

I had a 1964 Starflight 90hp with the same 3 button shifter and the shifter was the only good working system on the motor:eek:
it is long gone -gave it away-but a buddy wired a 3position toggle switch inplace of the 3-button shifter that worked great.
Good luck with it.

solenoids could be bad, not uncommon, or the oil pump could be shot. very unusual. i just hate to see some one put $200 into that motor, that is only worth $200.

Re: hydro electric shift no reverse or neutral

thank you for your advice. I will try to find a good used motor to put on.
