Hydro Electric Control Units

In another thread, there was a discussion in regard to the various electric shift control units made by OMC over the years. One thing that I learned in that thread, was that there are two different types (aside from the Johnson/Evinrude differences) of hydro electric units - one for the motors with amplifier equipped ignitions, and one for the magneto cd type ignitions. The older units apparently had a black plug on the wiring, while the newer ones had a yellow plug.

Does anyone know if these control boxes can be swapped between the two types of motors without changing the plug and/or rewiring?
