Hydraulic Trim Motor

Can I connect the hot lead (+) from my hydraulic trim motor directly to the battery? It's currently attached at the starter motor and for some reason isn't allowing current to pass through...thanks for any insight anyone can give.

Welcome to iboats! I think you have a problem somewhere else. Are you talking about the wire that comes from the battery to the starter, if so, there is 12v there all the time and shouldn't make a difference if you move the trim motor lead directly to the battery. I could be missing something though.

Maybe you have a bad connection of the 12V lug or ground lug. Both need to be clean to pass proper current. I'd clean those connections well.<br /><br />Won't make any difference attaching to battery. I would think it would be more of a hassle when you take out the battery to charge it.<br /><br />Are your other pump relay connections clean? Is the trim limiting switch allowing trim operation?

Rhadley, I've cleaned all other connections, starter motor works, relays work correctly when power was jumped (I used my jumper cables)to the relays directly from battery, trim switches worked correctly, it just wouldn't work off of the existing hot lead which is attached to the starter motor. I didn't think to unconnect it and place it on the battery for a test. I'll try that next. Thanks for the ideas.

Is there a little square part about 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch on the connection to the starter ? If so, that is a fuse....it might be blown. You can get that at any Merc dealer.

I just did all the terminal cleaning, which is why this is so fresh in my mind. My trim didn't activate sometimes.<br />I'd also check the trim switch at the driver's control. See if it closes connection when moved to "up" or "down", and see if trailoring switch works.<br />Then disconnect the switch wires at the trim pump, hook on long wire to volt meter and see if you have continuity between switch and wire at the pump relay.<br /><br /> My old boat wires get corroded sometimes and usually I can find the problem by wiggling them and seeing if it changes the reading.
