I bought a Slickcraft SS 215 a while back that needed a motor rebuild. While pulling the motor out I came across the hydraulic system connected to the motor mounts....

This boat is my first I/O so I've never seen anything like it. I understand that it has to do with the pitch of the outdrive but is it necessary???

I put the rebuilt 302 back in yesterday and haven't hooked the system back up because i'm not sure if it even works properly anymore.

Any advice?

Re: hydraulic lift under my 175 OMC???

how necessary depends on the hull.
Boats with power trim are usually much nicer to operate and enjoy.

If the rams are dry, your engine will be sitting nose down and your drive trimmed all the way up

it's gonna be difficult to get on plane. and the boat may porpoise going down the lake, or ride the waves rough

If you aren't going to use the system, at least find a way to block the rams mid-stroke

you've done all the work of rebuilding the engine, seems silly to not hook up the power trim....

If your not gonna use it, scrounge up some non power trim engine mounts as without the hydraulics connected there is nothing to keep engine from jumping up and down. But I would repair it and keep it.
