Re: Hydraulic Bottle Jack Fluid
When in college I borrowed a jack from a mechanic friend. I noticed it was leaking just a wee bit and I needed max travel- so I asked if I could add fluid. He insisted on brake fluid. OK, his jack, I'll do as told. DESTROYED the seals! Brake fluid also absorbs moisture which encourages corrosion. ATF is cheaper anyway, though I tend to use jack oil.

By the way the cheap imported jacks often come with really nasty awful oil in them (cooked rancid fish oil?). Can't hurt to replace with something a little better. Better yet get a decent US made jack in the first place.
