Hi All,

I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a fully loaded 2013 202 with the Volvo 270hp DP setup.

Is there anything that I should know pertaining this particular build?

This will be my first boat, and I'm having it built for me so I'd rather get all the goodies from the factory and I've read that a DP setup would be wonderful (other boat models).

I suspect that the 270hp is more than enough power, I just want to make sure that it wouldn't be a hindrance to the handling / control of the boat.

Thanks!

Re: Hurricane 202 I/O w/ Penta 270 DP

It seems many Hurricane owners prefer outboard setups, so I appreciate seeing another potential I/O owner coming on board.

I see that you are going for the max HP for the boat. That should dial up the fun!

The SS202 I/O is similar to my model (12.5 degree deadrise hull design, beam width, larger front deck area for fishing seats, etc.). I had a choice between the Volvo or Mercruiser engine/drive power configurations when I ordered the boat. Both are excellent tried and true power choices (they both use the same GM engine blocks), I decided to go with the Mercruiser version of what you are considering, primarily because I trailer the boat to different places and figured no matter where I go, there will always be at least ?one? Mercruiser dealer near by. That coupled with the good parts availability I thought was a plus as well. I?m not waving the flag for Mercruiser as this is my first Mercury product, just sharing my reasoning this time around. I have had a previous boat with a Volvo engine/drive and had an excellent experience with it. I also like the 5.0L engine, which I had in a couple of GM vehicles years ago, they performed excellently and I had great experience with them. After a year and a half using the boat, I've been pretty satisfied with the fuel efficiency and performance of the 5.0 L MPI ECT coupled with the dual prop (I thought this configuration would be the best mix of performance and efficiency for my boat, even though I could go up to 320 HP. I couldn't be happier so far).

What you will appreciate most is the added performance of the dual prop drive. Although my boat is longer and heavier than the SS202 I/O, I have been very impressed on how quickly it jumps on plane (with or without dragging water toys) and I can also keep it on plane going as slow as 15-16 MPH (I have not had the need to use the aid of trim tabs to accomplish this). The boat handling is increased as well due to the unique prop design and larger housing of the drive. The boat will especially perform well with watersports activity. It will be a great performer for the experienced and you can go slow enough to have beginners feel more comfortable. There is also a feel of ?smoothness? that those counter-rotating props give that a single prop doesn't usually have. The drive system also gives you excellent control at slow speeds, especially when docking.

Most Hurricane owners love their boats (me included). You will also appreciate a great bunch of owners on the iBoats forum (and the Hurricane Owners forum on Hurricane Boats). Personally, I think you?re making a great choice. Overall, the engine/drive configuration you?re considering in your model should make it really fly and handle like a sports car. I can?t picture anything less than a big smile on your face every time you pull back the throttle.

Share your experience when you get the boat in the water!

Re: Hurricane 202 I/O w/ Penta 270 DP

I have a 2008 FD202GS I/O and would guess hull wise there's not too much is different. I have the 4.3L 190HP Merc and it has plenty of power and I have no performance issues. Some folks like the outboard for a longer season but I went with the I/O for family swim deck usage. Works for me and I wouldn't do anything different, just depends on what you want. Only issue I ever had with the boat is it tends to get a high bow getting on plane and the low speed hunting, but smart tabs did an outstanding job fixing the issues. I don't see where the extra power would be a detractor in any way for you and your prop/engine package may not have planning issues. I love the boat and would buy another without doubt. I think whether you choose an I/O or outboard Hurricane does a good job of matching engines to hulls and out of all the people I know here on our lake that own Hurricanes OB or I/O they love them.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a couple of requests for quotes being worked on right now.

Any idea's on if / what I should expect as a % off of MSRP?

First time boat buyer here, so I don't want to be taken for a ride.

I was lucky that my model fell under Hurricane's "Amazing Boat Deals" promotion in 2012 and you couldn't get a much better deal than they were offering in their advertising. I am looking in the 2013 Hurricane brochure and it looks like the "Amazing" promotion is still on for certain models. The model you are considering isn't included in the promotion, but I noticed the SS201 I/O is. Although the deck layouts are different, the hull seems to be exactly the same. You might want to see what the price difference is between the SS202 and SS201 just to get an idea of pricing.

So I received three boat quotes, two in FL and one in NJ.

I took this paper trail and went to the marina that I've been dealing with more regularly and told them to take the holiday weekend to work up a quote and I'll talk to them Tuesday...

We Shall See.

Just to add perspective from a two time and current Hurricane owner. Both I've had with the outboard. Why? Simply for two reasons. If you run your boat in shallows, outboards will have a lower draft than the I/O when trimmed out (1 inch difference on your model, and on older models it was more significant) Two, I work on my own motor. A friend who has an I/O in his Hurricane is just as nice and just as fun. But when I work on it, I'm cramped for space and simply find the outboard more serviceable for the DIY mechanic. Outside of that, makes no difference in my opinion. Load it up and have some fun.

Your setup will be amazing. You'll really enjoy it and it should be one screaming boat with your config. We look forward to further updates and of course pictures.
