Hi, I am not sure if this is the right forum but I have a problem with my Hummingbird transducer causing too much spray at the back of my boat to the point it is spraying in, it doesn't matter where I mount it it still causes a spray. I have mounted it as per the instructions. Am I better with a through hull? I would rather not drill through my hull, is there a better option

I believe it's a common problem.
I purchased a shield that goes above it to divert the spray.

Before I installed it though I read somewhere that all you have to do is fill the air gap between the bracket and the hull.
I wrapped some electrical tape around it and it's been fine.

The tape works and h-bird has a rubber gap filler

Re: Hummingbird tranducer casuing spray

if your in a boat that has a very shallow draft [ex. a jon boat] the transducer will stick out of the water when at higher speeds. my boat drafts 1/2 foot when at low speeds. at high speeds i draft maybe a inch if that. not including the motor. when i go fast my fish finder dosent register the depth at all cause the transducer is completely out of the water. its gives me some wack depth like 600ft and i know I'm in 4 or 5 foot of water.
i have a humminbird 561 DI fish finder mounted on a 14ft sea nymph jon boat.

Happens with mine, too. Pretty annoying if you're in the rear of the boat...

I wrote Humminbird today and they are shipping a plug to me for free, too. Good customer service!

Re: Hummingbird tranducer casuing spray

So today I had a package delivered to the house. Looked like a rather large box for a rubber plug. Opened it up to find that Humminbird sent me a whole new mount! I can't wait to see if it helps with the spray problem.

I had the exact same issue when I mounted my Humming bird transducer. I just took a small piece of aluminum plate and cut/bent/ground it to shape to keep the water out of the gap between the transducer and the plastic mount. Used the same holes that held the plastic mount in place, to mount the aluminum piece. Make sure you don't block the bottom of the transducer itself. The idea is to block the water from shooting up in the gap or space between the mount and the transducer head.

Transducer rotated up. Plate exposed.

It did not eliminate the spray 100%, but it did reduce it enough to be acceptable for me. I later replaced the plate with the rubber plug from Hummingbird. The spray was about the same as my home made plate.

I made a shield on my old boat and it worked fine.
