Hey guys. I just got my first boat and bought a used fish finder to go on it. It's a Humminbord 300TX with the trolling motor transducer. I'm wondering if I can mount that transducer in the bilge (it's a fiberglass boat) or on the transom, or will it not work properly then? Thanks guys.

Depends on the transducer. If it is the Wide Side transducer, it will not work properly. ie the side beams will not work, only the down beam may work. If you post a pic, I could tell you if it is a Wide Side or not.

you can mount on transom for sure if you can figure out a mounting device.

If it is a Wide Side, transom mounting should take in all considerations like you were installing a side imaging transducer. ie motor, tabs, speedo, and other things can block the side beams.

If it is a standard 90 degree three beam, most likely it can be mounted in bilge.

Here is a pic of a Wide Side:

I believe it is a Wide Side. Here is a pic of it. If I fabricated a mount for the transom that would mount it horizontally with the boat and off to a side would it work with the 3 beams then?

Yes, that is a Wide Side transducer. Wide Side was the early pre-curser to todays Side Imaging. I never found the WS display that helpful. Look at the manual and see if it is something you think is helpful to you. If you thought standard 2D fake fish symbols annoying, the WS will set you over the top. ;)

The WS transducer has a different pin layout than the 3-beam. The unit detects which is connected and defaults to that display. I manually select 3-beam on start-up on my 400TX, when using WS. This gives me the standard 2D display. You have to ignore all of the hollow fish symbols, which are from the side beams. Most will be false anyway, but what is real, will not be the right perspective (depth or distance).

I recommend jury rigging something to see and form your own opinion, before commiting to taking the time to make a custom mount. I expect that a 3-beam transducer has more value to you.

Thanks for the reply's and info. So you're saying I should just make some sort of temporary mount and try it on the 3 beam setting to see if it works ok?

Yep. No sense making it perminent if you don't like the results.
