Gents,

I am new to boating. I have a Wellcraft 190 with an Evinrude 140. I am in the process of sorting the engine and getting the electrics in top shape. Now I wish to improve the hull.

The bottom of the Hull has some deep scores and the fibreglass matting is visible in some areas. This is not a huge amount and is more of a cosmetic problem I think.

My problem is I don't know how to go about the improvements. Do I rub down the area and then fill the scores with plastic filler or do I build it up with fibreglass resin?

After completion, how do I restore the paintwork? The Hull is white and I have no idea what the final laminate is or what sort of paint to use.

Can someone advise please.

Thanks

NG

Very small areas can be filled with plastic filler or better yet, Marine-Tex. Larger areas should be done with resin. Make sure you get a good soaking of resin anywhere there is f-glass mat peaking through.

I have had good luck with both marine paints and automotive paints. It depends on where your boat will sit most of the time. If it's on a trailer-the auto stuff is fine. If it sits in the water-go marine with a good quality bottom paint and upper hull paint.
My favorite marine paints are made by Petitt.
Valspar is good too. Any paint is only as good as the prep. job before.

NGRIFF1.

If you use auto paint you'll have to spray. Many marine paints can be brushed or sprayed. You can get a nice finish by brushing if you take your time. Sand with wet sand paper between coats, and color sand the final coat with 600-800 grit paper.

Thanks DJ.

Itching to start now.

I have a not of chrome and aluminium that is not looking its best. Some of the aluminium is pitted, most of it dull. The chrome has seen better days but no way I can afford to replace. Any top tips anywhere to restore metal.

NG

Just elbow grease, patience and very fine steel wool.
