Azlo, I would think that by the time you have your decking secured to the stringers and hull, the worries about twisting will be gone. If you want you could also put in some cross braces between the stringers like this

Don't neglect the loose rivets in the stringers before you lay in the deck, you may want to just replace them all.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

Yeah Coolbike, my factory setting is 110 and it has a 140 now. I know your not suppose to but from what little i know its because your hull can twist or do other s*#t from the speeds, am I correct? And dam it it man i love the sound of that v8 "BA BA BA BA BA BA". After all we are in America, were everything is just bigger with little sense. Home of the whopper and the supersized meals (and still order a diet coke), where the women have bigger boobs cause of the silicone, where the pizza gets faster to you than the ambulance and then....we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. Makes almost no sense right, but dam i would not mind a hot dog in one hand and a silicone boob on the other in my boat with a v8!! Only in my America.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

Sure you can reinforce it all you want but it will concentrate the stresses somewhere else ( the unreinforced area's) I see it in aircraft all the time and the result is usually cracking and working rivets. There's no free lunch

YES you can. BUT if you do make sure you do it with ALUMINUM NOT WOOD NOT FIBERGLASS.:D I know the guy I bought my 21' MRNR from has a 73/74 21'
STARCRAFT rated for 140hp and he added bracing to his in ALUMINUM and is running a 250hp on it.:D MAN I bet that thing fly's. His is O/B of course.

Azlo I wouldnt worry so much about 30HP I dont think it will make that big of a differance 100HP yes 30 not really.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

I've got a 454 in my 21' Holiday. I'll have pictures of it running the MO river within the week. You can reinforce the hull but in the long run it would be much smarter, and way more difficult, to put a thicker skin on her.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

A 454 roverjohn!? Now thats what im talking about. Yes Pics i would love to see, im sure im talking for others that are kept quiet. This subject is not well liked. But,,,safety is always the highest priority. But also you do have to ask yourself why risk it sometimes. I think that sometimes thats when we stumble upon gold, as long as you dont danger others. Yeah Jimb, I will be using aluminum, as a matter of fact im replacing a lot wood with aluminum, except for the dash. I like the wood grain with gauges. Also roverjohn what do u mean adding skin to the hull? is it possible? Maybe 2 layers of aluminum sheet? Is there any other boaters that acomplished the overpowering after reinforcing the hull?????

Thanks for your comments again comrades.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

Azlo I have to ask what your planning to put in the boat if its simply a 140 where a 110 should be then just do it 30HP isnt going to make a huge differance on the boat itself. Now if were talking a fire breathing V8 with a Jet drive then thats another story :D.

Re: hull reinforcement, possible

Azlo, I really don't think adding and extra 30hp will make any difference at all. What will matter is how you operate the boat. The motor itself does not generate that much force on the hull. The large forces come from direction changes at speed such as hitting large waves or wakes. The forces will add up at at least the square of the speed increase.

When I suggested, half jokingly, about increasing the skin thickness I was really saying that removing the old skin and adding a thicker one would be the best way to stiffen and strengthen the hull. At some point you would not need the ribs at all and you would have a welded aluminum boat that just looks like a SC. Welded hulls are well proven but then you don't have an inexpensive SC to start with.

My boat will spend all it's time on the MO river where it is glass smooth 24-7 so it should live a pretty easy life. I'll also keep the speed below about 40mph or so as I will never need to go faster when skiing.

I have a 140 now. But was thinking a 6cyl or 8. Or maybe i should just settle for the merc 470?

Azlo from what I understand stay as far away from the 470 as you can.
