Hull Color

I'm ordering my first fiberglass boat (19ft polar center console) and have the option of 3 hull colors (royal blue, sky blue, and light yellow). For the most part, the only evidence of connecting with a dock or rock with my alluminum boat was a minor dent. However, I am concerned about choosing a color that will not broadcast the battlescars. I like the looks of a contrasting dark color above the chine but In the past I have had automobiles with dark (black) colors which showed every scratch and ding and am kind of hesitant of ordering a boat with a darker color.

Since the boat will also serve double duty for some family fun (tubing, skiing, cruising, etc) I would also like to have a sporty look. The boat will be trailered most of the time with occasional mooring on weekends. I really would like to go with the royal blue but am concerned that the darker color will show scrapes and scratches more than the lighter colors.

Other than the concerns I indicated, Is there any advantage or disadvantage to a certain hull color?
Opinions and advice appreciated,

Kevin

I'd go yellow personally. Scratches always seem to come up white, and therefore less obvious.

Not so much scrathes, but if you want to actually enjoy your boat and not be waxing it every week, get the lighter hull. Colored Hulls, especailly Dark Blue, Black, will show any oxidation extremely fast without constant waxing. Washing will not make them look "clean". If you want a "New Boat shine", stay away from colored hulls.

I have had several color boats.the dark blue looked great but i eventually sold it because it was too hard to keep looking good.It would oxidize rather quickly. This took a lot of the fun out of it.My vote would be for the light yellow. The lighter colors will not fade anywhere near as quickly and can be maintained much easier.Scratches will not be as noticable and can be touched up easier. The light blue may give an old look to the boat just because of the light blue boats of the 70s.Charlie

I have to agree with the lighter color. Unless you really keep on the dark colors they will start to fade over time.
My buddies boat is maroon, looks great when wet but very cloudy when dry. He kept up with it for awhile.

Thanks for the input guys,

You kind of told me what I was thinking but didn't really want to hear. After some trailering, mooring, fishing, kids bicycle handlebars in the garage, etc; inevitably, the boat will not be new anymore. Therefore, many more years of looking descent seems better than the first year or two of looking good. I just have to bring myself to the point of accepting what is best for keeping our boat looking best. I will be sure to post pics when I take ownership of my new rig in the spring.

Perhaps I can name it the "Canary Ferry"
Thanks Again
Kevin
<><

I disagree. I have a dark burgundy red side on my boat. It is simply beautifull! Every time I look at it I have pride of ownership. Just get blue colored turtle wax when you need waxing. It covers most light scratches...where do you pick up so many scratches anyway?...don't you have mooring buoys?

...mind you I have a sporty black car and a red Caravan! You won't see me in any beige colored vehicle! Buy what looks good to you! Don't settle on a color because it's easy to leave dirty!

If it's any help to you... my next boat is going to be light yellow.

Not only for the reasons mentioned above, which are good ones BTW, but also because I really like the  look...

I'm not to big on Yellow, but if there's ever a place you can get away with it, it would be a boat on the water

Yellow.

Too bad you can't get it in white, that's what color CC's are supposed to be.

Re: Hull Color

PAkev:

My boat has a black hull which I think is beautiful. Personally, I think the dark hulls look the best, scratches are really not a problem, but the oxidation is. It will oxidize the same as any color but it will show more with the dark hull. If your a fanatic, and don't mind an extra waxing every year, it may not be a concern.

Re: Hull Color

I am the kina guy that would always second guess myself. If I really liked the royal blue better than I would get it. The satisfaction of getting the color I really like the best would be worth the extra time of waxing it more often.
I think that boat looks really sharp in a dark blue, but I also like the yellow.
One thing to consider is that darker colors make the boat look smaller.
