Has anyone ever ran a 88 spl on a 16 foot flat bottom? It did have an 1974 70 johnson. Both motors are jet drive.

Start with what the max capacity of the hull is. Too many threads about overpowered hulls to count.

A Merc 90 hp prop rated engine with a jet drive is only rated 65 hp. A 125 is only 80.

If you don't have a BIA decal and the boat is wide, deep, and stable I'd say a 60-65 hp on a 16' boat is frisky, but being careful, I wouldn't worry about it. Course the 70 is a 3 cyl and the 88 a V4, obviously heavier so you may have some transom settling issues.....water over the stern when you come off plane if you don't do it properly.....in steps giving the boat time to rise before the following wake gets to you. But you could redistribute some other things to mitigate the added weight.

Oh and on the BIA rating, the engines are prop rated, so compare your 88's jet drive HP.

I imagine you are rated for that but look for the rating plate. That's a BIG jon boat!
