When I pulled the wheel off the trailer I found two spacers monuted on the hub. Why would the previous owner have put them on the hub?

I put them back when I was finished repacking the hubs and can't think of a reason why they where there.

Re: hub spacers?

Spacers are frequently used when the backspacing on a wheel is not compatible with brake components, springs, or as was mentioned, there is an interfence problem with a fender or some other part of the vehicle or trailer. If you wonder why they are there, remove them, install the wheel and then see what rubs or is very close to rubbing.

Ayuh,......

And,.... If there's Nothing Rubbing,..........

Get Rid of the Spacers.........
They tend to put Excessive Loads out onto the Lugs,... Instead of the Hub, where the Load Belongs......

This of course was the complete answer. I was just too lazy to type all that!

Whogotz, where are you at in Central FL? Polk County by any chance?

Volusia County. There is no fender, and no visible reason why they are there. They were only put on one side so it is strange.

Re: hub spacers?

Were there 2 spacers under each lug or 1 spacer under each of 2 lugs? Remove the spacers and spin the wheel to see if it wobbles.
When I was a kid we had a JD tractor with a bent rim on front so we put spacers under 2 adjacent lugs to stop the wobble. And it worked.
John

Re: hub spacers?

If these are individual spacers and are not fitted to EACH lug, get them out of there as that technique does not belong on a vehicle or trailer traveling at highway speeds. The spacers I'm referring to are cast, one piece units that fit over all lugs. Their only purpose is to space the wheel outward, not to compensate for a bent wheel.

whogotz, you're not referring to those thin little keepers to hold the brake drum on the hub are you?
