Hub Size Question

I have the chance to get a 22p laser prop with a 13 1/2 hub. It would be run on a Volvo SX-m drive and there in lies the issue.

48- 16992A46Rotation - RightDiameter - 13 1/2Pitch - 2248- 16992A46Rotation - RightDiameter - 13 1/2Pitch - 2248- 16992A46Rotation - RightDiameter - 13 1/2Pitch - 22

The Volvo drive calls for 14" plus hubs, and a 13.5 could cause or would it cause a exhasut problem....That is my real concern aka slippage or venting

Now Merc does state one can use a Enertia on the drive with a 13.5 hub, but that's a Enertia

The boat can turn a 20p 4 blade Stilletto to 5000 and a 21p 3 blade to 4900.......55/56.3 mph

Anyone see any problem's here?

Re: Hub Size Question

That is a Lazer II and fits a range of Mercury/Mariner outboards and probably some stern drives. I have no idea if that will work on your Volvo. That prop is really spec'ed for a midrange series of outboards. Now then -- 13-1/2 is not the hub diameter but rather the overall diameter of the prop or looking at it in another way the circle it forms. Has nothing to do with hub diameter. Hub diameter is the diameter of the barrel of the prop where it meets the lower unit. Yes, if that diameter is too small you may have venting due to exhaust going around the hub rather than through it. Too large a hub causes mechanical interference.

Sorry guy's, i had little time to post and had to make a quick decision. Your both right due to the lack of info....Aka the prop has a tourqe flow hub wich will allow me to install the prop and yes the diameter is 13.5 but merc does recomend a 13.5" diameter prop on this drive..

I was just wondering if any had a laser on a volvo or gen 11 outdrive and there input

Re: Hub Size Question

Wh while your here what do you think of this. I am going to run a 22p laser with a 13.5 barrel on a sx drive. Long ago i ran 21 pitch stilletto to 56 at and a 4900 and a 20p 4blade stillettos to 4950 at 55 now

The 22 laser is setup for outboards. but i found a flo tourqe that will work with the drive and i am going to take a run tommorrow... But before i go do you see any problem's i should anticapate... i am going to take vids on the stern lift and speed it should be intresting..

Well that ideal sucked, the Laser did not have any bite at all. It was pretty cool to her the motor rev and the prop slowly catch but it never passed 53mph...and the rev limiter was talking to me most of the time....I dont believ it was due to barrel size, but limited blade area..

Dern-it TG, I wanted to give my input....
I wanted to say I thought you would likely be disapointed...the Laser is good on light, fast boats such as Bassboats of light design.
I tried one on the I/O Glastron in the garage...just couldn't get it to hook good enough to justify using it. It just does NOT work well on any boat with much for weight to the rear-end.

Agreed but it was cool at first to here that 4.3 spin up and roar like i was going some where in a big hurry...but nope notta.. Now just what does a guy do with a 22p laser with a flow tourqe hub not even a blemish on it...and it dont work on his boat... god the agony.......;)

Re: Hub Size Question

Tail the 13.5 is the dia of the prop not the hub size, most outboards under 125hp have a small hub and stern drives and high hp outboards have a larger hub size (not prop dia). For a lot of props Merc will have an even number pitch for small hub prop and a odd number pitch for a large hub prop.

I know the high five is like this, my 23" hf is large hub but the 24" is a small hub.

Putting a small hub prop on a large hub drive will have one heck of a lot of ventalation and odds are you would never get on plane with one.

just something to think about

Dave L

ps I run a 23' hf 13.25 dia on an sx it does just fine.
