I took my, recently acquired, 1986 Glassport bass boat out for the third time yesterday. As I backed it into my driveway I heard a loud squealing sound. When I inspected the hubs I mad a harrowing discover. My bearings were completely gone on one of them. When I jacked the trailer up, I was able to pull the wheel and hub completely off without removing the lug nuts. Regardless to say, I am counting my blessings.
My problem now, nothing compared to what it could have been, is to find the right hub to fix my trailer. A mechanically inclined friend of mine, who inspected the damage, told me I need a new hub. The spindle suffered only minor damage that can be grinded and sanded out. I have no idea how to find the right hub though.
My trailer, as far as I can tell, is the original one that came with the boat. It has a Glassport sticker with Tennessee Trailer listed as the manufacturer.
Does anyone have any idea how I can determine the right hub?
I will be inspecting my wheels more closely before heading to and coming from the lake from now on. I hope that you all do the same, especially those with older equipment. I hate to think what would have happened had I hit a bump and the weight of the trailer/boat had been lifted long enough for the wheel to come off.
Thanks,
bassloverky
