HUB RACES UPDATE

I picked up my hub from the machine shop this afternoon.
The man added some metal to the hub then put it on a lathe and turned it down until it accepted the race.
The race was not completely set in but I tried it and the wheel wobbled some.
I took it all apart and drove the race in further.
Put it all back together, put it on spindle, spun it and there was very very little wobble.
Now to road test and water test it.
Questions: does a little wobble hurt?
Do I need to put the buddy bearings on now or wait till i test it some?

jbd

Why did you add metal to the hub and then turn it down to accept the races. Why not replace the hub and be done with it. Wobble is not good, how much do you consider a little?

Re: HUB RACES UPDATE

These hubs are 43 years old. A home made trailer from pipe and an old Ford axel (I think).
I do not think I could ever find a replacement hub. It has one and one quarter inch inner bearing and three quarter inch outside. these are easily found, but I do not think I would be able to find a hub that tapers like that. Also, it is a five hole 13 inch wheel from a ford fairlane. I got this boat and trailer from my dad. also, he gave me the limited info about this rig. I inherited it 8 years ago.

The machine shop did a pretty good job.

Wobble is just a very little. alsmost not noticable.

jbd

Re: HUB RACES UPDATE

When you say wobble, are we talking that the wheel/tire wobble when you spin the tire as if it's rolling? If so, are we talking as if the tire is out of round or as if the rim has been bent as if it was hit with a side ways blow? How much deflection are we talking? Put someting up against the tire (such as a box), rotate the tire 'til the tire has pushed the item away the farthest. Then rotate the tire to the greatest clearance from the item. What's that greatest clearance measurement? And is this clearance at the tread part of the tire or the side part of the tire.

Or is the wobble you're talking about a lateral movement, such as grabbing the tire at the top and bottom and you're able to rock the tire in and out at the top and bottom? As if the bearings aren't tightening enough.

Re: HUB RACES UPDATE

There is no bearing wobble. It is quite and rolls ok. The tightness is ok also. I did as directed by people on this web site and snugged the bearings with plyars, then backed the nut off and handtighned , and put in cottekey.

The slight wobble is when i spin the tire and watch it from the back of the trailer.
It is about a quater of an inch maybe.. Not too noticable.
jbd

nomoe,

A 1/4" inch wobble at highway speeds will turn into a horrendous vibration. You won't feel it in the tow vehicle, but your trailer and boat sure will.

You need to look further for the source of that wobble. Hub, wheel, tire?

Re: HUB RACES UPDATE

What kind of towing are you doing. Cross country or just down the block to the local ramp? What speeds are you likely to tow at?

Low speed or short distances probably won't be a problem at all.
