I have to go get an old boat I picked up off the site tomorrow. Long story short the dealer needs it gone and the weather is turning to Saturday night. Trailer has been setting two years. I plan on pumping the grease to the hubs before I move it but is there anything else I can do or should do before a 80 mile trip home? How hard is it to replace hubs on a EZ roller trailer? Thanks in advance
Lee

Re: HUB question, urgent

A hub should be easy to repalce on any trailer......once the cotter pin and nut are off the whole hub and bearings should slide right off the spindle (provided they arent really rusty.)

If it were me I would bring along a jack and spin the tires and see if they bind up or if you can hear bearing rattle. Last thing you want is the bearings to lock-up. If they seem ok then make sure they are greased and watch them carefully as you drive (stop every so often and check them). If ther bearings are really bad, it doesnt take long to replace them.....I just did mine in about 30-40min JMHO....others may have some better advice.

go prepare to change to bearing and races, check the existing one and if you feel comfortable go with them. check the after a short while in a parking lot. if they are hot then change them.

Good advice on the jack and wrench. Pick up an X-wrench for the nuts - they help when the lug nuts fight you.

Also, don't forget the brakes. You may very well find they are bad. It would be bad enough if you had no brakes, but impossible if the calipers are frozen to the rotor. You may want to make sure you have the tools needed to remove the caliper in case you need to do some work.

Obviously you want to take it slow and easy. It also goes without saying that once you get back you need to go over everything before you go out again.

Take some PB Blaster along to penetrate the lug nuts. No point in breaking off the studs and making the job more difficult.
