HP ratings 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke

I was just looking at a 2hp Honda 4 stroke engine, I'll need at least 4 hp to push my 16' fiberglass MFG, this 4 stroke motor looks big enough but only 2 HP, just wondering if it would have the torque needed to push me through 3' waves, my kicker mount is rated for 6hp max, the physical size of this 4 stroke engine makes it look like 6hp, which is what I used to have until someone stole it.

2 HP is 2 HP. It doesn't matter if it's 2 or 4 stroke.

A horsepower is equal whether it comes from a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke.
The 4 stroke is far heavier and at 2 hp it cannot do what a 4 hp 2 stroke can do.
You can probably get a very nice 9.9 or 9.5 johnson or evinrude + a kicker bracket for a 10 horse engine for the price of a 2 horse 4 stroke

Yea that's what I was afraid of, I hate to let it go, 2000 honda 4 stroke 2hp for $100.00 at my neighborhood yardsale. I need a 6hp max.

do you own the the honda or were you contemplating buying it? If you were going to buy it, I'd buy the honda for $100 and then sell it for double or more. There's a lot of people out there looking for a good running 2-3hp motor for trolling or backup for smaller boats. If you're selling and the motor is running well...i'd think you can get at least $200-$300 from selling it on ebay or craigslist.

If you need it for trolling then you don't want that motor anyhow, any of the single cylinder models vibrate and make so much noise that it can become very irritating after just a short period of time. Get a twin if at all possible.
