I am going to purchase a 1956 Johnson motor, Model #FD-10 and Serial # 201356 but the ower could not tell how many HP of this motor. He guessed it was 20 HP but not sure.
This motor has dual fuel line (call presurized tank). It is new to me about this system. I get used to our conventional system (one fuel line connected to fuel tank).
Can anyone explain about dual fuel line system and how it works. Can I convert it to our newer system so I can use any the same fuel tank from my
1959 12HP Viking motor. When did Johnson switch to newer fuel system?
Thanks alot for all your inputs

FD-10= Johnson 1956 15HP

Since your system doesn't have a fuel pump to feed the carbs, the pressurized tank keeps the carbs full of fuel. Basically you pump up the tank and it holds fuel pressure to the carbs. They can be converted to a fuel pump, but not sure if your other Motor set-up will work. Others here are familiar with these systems and can tell you more about what will work for converting it.

A little more info about the motor:

web page

Re: Hp of 1956 Johnson Motor ?

Your FD10 is a 1956 15HP. The presure system uses presure from the crank case to presurize the fuel tank, which forces fuel to the carb. This is a fairly reliable system when properly maintained. The problem is this equiptment is 40-50 years old now and most needs to be over hauled. Not that big of deal. You can install a fuel pump system, somtimes it's worth it sometimes not. These older motors run a 24:1 ratio so they should have a separate tank anyway. My opinion is which ever way is least expencive.

I did not know that it runs on 24:1 ratio and I assumed that my 1959 12 HP Viking will run the same ratio as well because they are the same age.
But the previous owner of my Viking had converted it to newer fuel system therefore it is fine if I
convert this one to new system so I can share the same tank.
Question: where I can buy the new fuel pump kit ?
Are these motor reliable? (Johnson is known for it reliability)

Rickdb1boat, your info about the motor is nice.
