I currently have a 1977 115 hp Johnson on my 18 ft starcraft (8 ft beam). The motor is tired and I'm looking at a 90hp Honda 4 stroke. It's one year old and was owned by a friend. The 115hp worked great when it ran. Is a new 90hp large enough for my boat? What difference will I notice?

Howdy Papaw. Your Johnny was rated at the crank, so it's original hp at the prop (where motors have been rated since the early 80s)was a little less than 100. The Honda, then, would be in the same ballpark on performance. You probably wouldn't notice any difference without an accurate speedo.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Honda engines, but I have also heard that they have had some problems with parts and service. If you have a first class dealer near you, that should be good insurance.

Happy boating.
JB

Don't forget the weight difference.

I've played with a couple of the Big Hondas and I've noticed a big difference in the low end torque from the 4 strokes. Top end may be similar, but hole shot may actually be improved.
