Re: HP FOR 16FT JOHN BOAT

I just bought a 9.9 2 stroke Mercury for my 14ft jon boat. I would say 25hp would do the job

What's the boat rated for? Is this an aluminum boat? Any idea on it's weight?

Re: HP FOR 16FT JOHN BOAT

The answer to this question would help me also. I currently have a waterlogged dory but am thinking about buying a used 16x 5 or 6? flat bottom jon boat. I was wondering if my 30hp tohatsu would push it fast enough to plane out with 3 or four people. Im not sure because my current waterlogged boat will not plane out with more than two people. Even though the jon is bigger I figure it should still be lighter. I cant even lift the rearend of my current boat off the trailer and Im 6ft 3in 250lb. It is very over weight. Hoping the new one will be completely different. thanks

Re: HP FOR 16FT JOHN BOAT

Im not sure It does have a 40hp on it now but I was buying it without the motor and using mine for financial reasons. I was planning on trying to work a trade out with my outboard for the 40hp but not real sure if that will work. Was hoping the 30hp would be sufficient. thanks for the reply

ya it will be fine to use a 30hp motor. just after maybe some fine tunning weight distrubtion. different props. tilt adjustments.

mainly when u have a full load try different wieght styles and such.

u also just wanna be able to plane so ur weight might have to be on the front a bit.

ya it will work :D

u might get about 22-26 mph with the motor.

My buddy runs a 17' G3 aluminum bass boat w a 25 merc. He gets 28 on the speedo and that boat is allot heavier than yours. The only time it struggled to plane was whne we loaded up 1000# worth of gear for a camping trip.

My 16' V hull aluminum gets 28 on the gps fully loaded and with two big guys with a 30.

I'd say a 25 or 30 would do it fine but if you plan to load 3-4 guys in regularly, you'll need the 40.

I have a 1448 Crestliner Jon (14'X48" bottom) with a '92 Evinrude 15. Boat weights about 260# It will run 25 mph on GPS with me alone and 20 mph with me and DW.
