I JUST BOUGHT A 1995 125hp MERC AND WAS TOLD BY QUITE A FEW PEOPLE THAT IT WOULD HAVE MORE POWER THAN THE 1989 125hp FORCE ENGINE THAT WAS ON THE BOAT. DIDN'T THEY MEASURE THE HP AT THE PROP IN 89 AS WELL AS IN 1995 OR WAS IT AT THE FLY WHEEL OR WAS THE FORCE OVER RATED OR IS THIS ALL BS AND THEY ARE THE SAME. JUST CURIOUS. THANKS FOR ANY COMMENTS

TIGHT LINES TO ALL

PHIL

Re: HP COMPARISON??

Horsepower was measured at the prop on both, but its rumored that force engines are over-rated......

Re: HP COMPARISON??

Does anybody know when they changed to propshaftmesuring. I remember it around 82-83. How many average percent loss is in gearbox, if you should compare early eigthies to later models. Is is true i exa Evenrude 60Hp changed to the 55HP?

Re: HP COMPARISON??

Ok,guys/gals. Here it is.

I have a machanic friend that told me that Force never went to Porp Horsepower. All Force hp ratings were crankshaft.

There is a 10% loss everytime the drive shaft takes a 90 drgree turn.

10% for outboards
20% sterndrives

I believe that it was '82 that the change over was made. That's why I can get away with a '79 Merc 140, cause it's about the same as an '82 and newer 115. Actually Mercury under rates their motors and mine is around 126hp
