if i was overstreesing my truck with my trailer. i'm within the max weight and all, but realize that the "max weight" doesn't mean that i won't put my transmission at risk for a burnup.

A lot depends on how you drive it as well. Constantly "gunning" it will put added stresses to the towing vehicle. Gentler acceleration, braking and finding the cruising speed that "feels right" will minimise any excessive wear and tear on the towing vehicle. I pull my 16ft fibreglass with 140 hp outboard at around 100 to 110 kph (60 to 65 mph) on the highway using a Ford Windstar with no issues to date. It feels right at this speed and while many people go past me with trailers on the back we have always got there if a little later than them. In some cases we have gone past them when they were stopped on the shoulder with vehicle issues.
The other thing is to read the road well ahead to avoid any harsh braking whenever possible.

The key to tranny longevity is to tow in whatever gear the tranny will stay in. Generally, with heavier loads, constant shifting from overdrive to direct, and torque converter lock/unlock is an indication that you need to be in a lower gear. Don't confuse OD/Direct downshift with converter lock/unlock. To determine which is happening, hold speed and then with your left foot, gently "touch" the brake pedal while watching the tach. Remember what that felt link and how much the RPM changed. You should notice 300 - 400 RPM increase. Thats the torque converter unlocking and that alone is not stressful unless it happens on even gentle grades. If rpm changes more than 20% thats the OD/direct downshift. You will generally feel the converter unlock first and if more power is needed, the downshift occurs. If that's happening often, you should be towing in direct. Axle ratio, engine selection and load will ultimately determine how much shifting will occur.
