How weird is meeting an Iboats aquaintance?

I see that AK is headin' to Adelaide, Dunaruna knows that I have threatened to meet up with him in Melbourne, GetReel and I have talked about Perth, TilliamWe and I have talked about Peoria, I am going to be in Houston this week . . .

With all of that said, how weird is it that someone would say "Hey _____ I am going to be in ____ and wondering if you would like to meet." One part of it sounds a little presumptuous i.e. I was taught never to invite myself. The other is kinda stalker like. Recipient "well his politics are kinda on the fringe, and the wife hates visitors, but I want to be polite . . . hmmmmmmm..."

Re: How weird is meeting an Iboats aquaintance?

I have often thought the same questions.

Other people on iboats have met, it would be interesting to hear their thoughts on the subject.

I recently met with triton111, he invited me to the motorcycle GP. It was a pretty brave move on his part, he didn't know me (for all he knew, I could have been a 400lb woman who munches on mars bars all day long and types on a computer). We had a great day, now he and his partner are joining myself and my family for a few days up at the lake over christmas. It's that easy - a friendship is born.

I would think that the safest way to meet would be a drink in a cafe or pub. If things don't 'click', in 15 minutes you make excuses and leave. If everythings normal and nice, move onto a bbq at home or a restaurant. Politics & religion to be checked at the door - until the glenfiddich is openned. ;)

Personally, I enjoy meeting new people and learning about different cultures. My wife on the other hand, doesn't. She only comes out of her shell well after I have broken the ice - she relies on my judgment.

My honest view is that we would certainly be living in a very boring world if we never attempted to meet and greet.

Aldo

Edit: On the issue of 'getreel'. I don't think I have seen him post since the 'achris' outburst. Me thinks they are both permanently offline.

Rodbolt - so that's the Venezuela connection. Great for you! You'll love it there, and they are the most beautiful and hospitable people. But you probably know that already...

Dunaruna's recipe for meeting is probably the safest. But, yes, it would be cool to meet someone you think you know a bit and have at least something in common with.

Its really kind of fun to put a real person to the name. I meet up with Bondo last spring and had a enjoyable visit with him although I did kind of take him away from his fishing. Flathead has also gave me an invite to meet him on a couple of his fishing trips but I haven't quite been able to get the timing down on that one yet.

QC, as long as you leave the ball gag & the "body massage & personal lubricant" in your hotel room, I wouldn't be weirded out at all if you called wanting to go to Sully's or out on the river! :D
Geee, Mattttttttt, I was gonna send you a note next time I was in Annapolis. Guess I won't now! :p :D

Re: How weird is meeting an Iboats aquaintance?

Shouldn't be too wierd, long as it's not me. ;)

I've met a couple guys from here, and a few from my fishing forum, first meeting is usually at the lake. At first I was a bit leary cause of the "stalker" angle then I remembered...if you're a fishing guide, strangers call you up & you take 'em out on your boat, at least with a forum member you have some idea of the wierdness level. :D

So here's an open invitation for traveling iboaters with connecting flights at DFW airport & some time to kill for lunch or a cup of coffee or a beer - my office is close by and I have access to get through security - post your schedule here, if time allows I'll meet ya there.

I've met several and had a blast.

Mr. & Mrs. Ladyfish and KKC came over for dinner.

Actually KKC came down for a week, we ran the boat, etc....good experience.

I've talked to several others on the phone and did a transaction with 1 and all were better than the average person you'd meet on the stree!

I have met mod3 and mod4. I really enjoyed both of them. Nice people.

I met TexasNate, used to be Nate from Arkansas, last summer. Nice young man. I enjoyed our lunch together. I might not have made a good impression on him, though. Shortly afterward his posting declined and then stopped. :(

High on my list of people I would like to meet are 12Footer, Paul Moir, Gonfishn, (Holy cow! There isn't enough room to name them all).

Re: How weird is meeting an Iboats aquaintance?

Some would be interesting to meet just to see if they are for real! As I like people and find meeting people interesting: can stand most for a day.

In college if I didn't have a date and wanted to go out I would call interesting names from the student directory (girls only!) and try to talk them into a date. Sometimes I had to take two (roommates) in order to get one to go. Had lots of fun times; only once I did I have to say it wasn't going to work and took them back after a pizza. Probably wouldn't work in todays climate.

And yes I think there are many on the forum that would be interesting to spend a day with. I'd pick your brains for boating knowledge.

For you information if you are wondering why I'm posting more than usually today. 22 and blowing snow outside!
