How too remove busted bearing carrier 20hp merc

help please<br />my prop recieved some damage when the trim tab anode came loose and made contact with the prop there is a terrible clunking sound now coming from the lower unit whilst in both forward and reverse gear but not in neutral, any ideas?<br />After removal of the prop i attempted to remove the bearing carier with a well fitting home made tool, following the instructions in my manual i proceeded to undo the LH threaded slotted bearing carrier, upon pressure i had a severe failure on the bearing carrier it not only broke off the slots but also half way down the carrier itself!!<br />Help i dont know what to do!<br />Any ideas would be great as i think its jammed in there pretty tight.<br />Breedy

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />I'll bet this is a saltwater motor and the corrosion weakened the bearing carrier. I've never heard of that happening otherwise. Right now you're probably at a Nothing-to-Lose point. You're going to have to heat up the area with a torch or heat lamp. Once it's good and warm, douse it with penetrating oil. As it cools, some will creep in. Hopefully enough to loosen things up. But as far as how to get hold of it, you're going to have to improvise something. Otherwise start looking around for a used lower end. Good luck.

Put a couple of flat plates against the hsg. and enough spacers around the prop shaft till it's the height where you can install the prop nut and use it as a puller to pull the carrier

thanks for your replies great advice!<br />and yes the motor has only ever seen saltwater and the water up here in north west australia is especially salty.<br /> With the used lower end the only 1 i could find is off an 18hp merc it looks identical except it has an o ring about an inch1/2 down the drive shaft where as my 20hp doesnt have one at all.It is an older model too, 1988ish and mines a 94 any ideas
