I have a 2003 yamaha txrb outboard. Are there any links for a step by step or anyone be able to tell me how to do it? I would like to try and save money and learn how to do it myself.thanks

I don't consider there to be much in winterizing an outboard. There are only two things I do differently in the winter.

1. I always store my outboard in a straight down position so that all of the water can run out.
2. I run every tank with stay-bil. I run only Yamalube ring free plus in the summer, but I run both in the winter because my trips become infrequent.

I also fish through the winter so I'm running at least once per month. If it will be a while before yours runs again than there are additional steps that some follow, like fogging for example.
How long is the engine going to sit idle?
Do you have the option of running it on muffs once or twice a month?
You can see what yamaha recommends by pulling your owners manual at

It will sit until about April, I don't use my original gas tank. I use the auxuiary tank. How should I go about dealing with this. In the manual it says to talk to a yamaha dealer. Do you know what to do about that?

Re: How to winterize a yamaha

As of now i use my secondary 6 gallon portable tank. There's no gas in my 50 gallon tank. Do I have to fill the 50 gallon tank with sta-bil or the portable tank? I would rather just fill the 6 gallon tank with gas and stabil. Would it effect the 50 gallon tank if I leave it empty? Or could I empty both tanks and drain the carbs? Whats the best thing to do with these tanks ? Thanks

That's a long time to be idle. I would take it to the nearest yamaha dealer and let them fog the engine and all of that other fancy jazz.

Are there any dealers close by?

Re: How to winterize a yamaha

I wouldn't follow that video since it's a different motor.
I'm suprised nobody else has chimmed in here. I know there are many people that do it themselves.
I do not do it at all so I can't walk you through a full winterizing process.
If it's already in your yard then you have the opportunity to run it some during the winter (on water muffs of course)

This is what I would do if I was in your position.

Fill up your 6 gallon tank with fresh fuel, Sta-Bil, and Yamalube Ring Free Plus. Once every two weeks, hook up water muffs to your motor, crank it, and let it run for about 15-20 minutes. Always keep the outboard pointing staright down so that the excess water will drain out when your done.

Is that the right way to go about this? I can't confirm that. I am only telling you what I would do. I run my motor all year. The longest it goes without running is a month tops. If I get close to that I'll find a way to run it even if I'm not taking it out. That's a personal preference. I don't like any engine to sit that long. My opinion.

You seem set on not taking it to the yamaha dealer which is really the only sure bet that it will be done right. If that is not something you are willing to do than following my steps would get you through the winter IN MY OPINION (disclaimer)

Is it a 4 or 2 stroke ? 4 stroke is much simpler although there is not much involved in either one.One thing you want to do in either case is drain and refill the lower unit oil and lube any grease fittings.
