I was given a 14.5 ft speed boat and trailer from my best friend a couple of weeks ago as a birthday present. WAY COOL(I think?)!! It needs work. I've never owned a boat, tho I have rented and used small HP boats (7.5 HP).

Boat info:
Mfg: Unknown
VIN: unknown,
Weight: unknown
Length: 14' 7"
Beam: 5' 10"
Current Steering: 1/4" vinyl coated cable to steering wheel(needs to be replaced and restrung.).

I don't know how to post a pic of my boat, but I have them on my computer. How can I post them?

Current Motor:
1968 Evenrude 85 HP w/manual shift.
Seperate Shift/Throttle cables.
(Also needs work - wiring harness, carb rebuild, ....)

Any ideas on HP rating for boat?
Any helpfull tips? If the motor repairs are successful, I plan on repainting the boat.

Welcome aboard sabbathkeeper!

I'm going to move your post over to another forum called "Boat Topics and Questions". You should get some help there.

This forum is just for chat and everyday topics other than boating and engines.

You can find the Boat Topics forum by going to the "Move to Other Topic" menu at the bottom of the page.

Good Luck and feel free to join our group here at Dockside anytime.

Go to photobucket dot com and upload your pics there. Is free to sign up and it gives you an
tag that you can copy and paste into your message here at iboats. Then viola'! Your pics show up with your message.
Hope that helped and welcome to the iboats family!

Dave

You need to use "Full Reply Form" button at bottom here to get to another button labeled "Image". That is where you paste the URL to your pic . . .

Re: How to verify proper HP for my boat?

Welcome to iboats! The "default" HP rating according to USCG guidelines (assuming your transom is at least 20 inches high) would be 2 x (14.6 x 5.8) - 90 = 79, rounded up to next 5 makes it 80. But just 1 inch more length or width gets you to 85.

Here's a tip:
Get an OEM shop manual from kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

BTW QC, if you use photobucket, they provide a copy/paste field that includes the ubb code - saves a couple mouse clicks.

Thanks for the welcomes! I'm loading the boat pics onto photobucket now. If all goes well, I'll have some pics of my new(old) boat and motor.

welcome. super project boat. have you evaluated the engine. they look like a matched pair, and original. get yourself a service an OMC manual. engine specific. johnson/evinrude engines were identical in that vintage. some tlc and you will have a fantastic boat.

Tashasdaddy,

Thanks dude! Already got the service manual, parts catalog, and accessories catalog. This weekend I'm gonna check the compression. If it's good. I'm ordering the wiring harness and carb rebuild kit. If and when the motor is running, I'll pull the motor and tackle to boat itself. Luckilly I haven't felt any soft spots in the floor. I've read a few horror  stories here in the forum about replacing the floor and finding more damage.

I am looking forward to sharing with you guys, as well as trying to absorb as much of your wlsdom as possible. It's much cheaper and less painful to learn from someone else's mistakes. ;)

I am so glad to have found this forum site. :D

look like the lower unit has been changed, but at that age transplants are normal. search in the johnson/evinrude forum for "awakening a sleeping outboard" great info. do you have any history on the motor. when last run. if not the sticker on the bow may give you a hint. use to have a 69 115, great engine, it's very similar. but was noted for power packs lasting only about 2-3 years.
