My Clymer manual is not specific as to how to undo the shift rod from my motor so that lower unit can be removed. I have done this before, had to remove a bolt on left side of motor (looking from rear) that is almost impossible to reach. I have been told that there is a much easier way. Can anyone tell me how? Also, using muffs, do I need to be concerned about how much water pressure is turned on to start and run the motor?

That bolt is not all that hard to get to. Take off the bottom carb, then use a 7/16 socket with a swivel and extension. Take out the bolt and pull out the pin that go's through the shift rod. Yes you should be concerned about the water pressure.

In many cases it's not even required to remove the carb, using a 1/4inch drive ratchet and extension with a swivel anda short socket I can remove the bolt without needing to remove anything near it.

Your right about that but I figured it would be easier for him to remove the carb.
