I bought a 72 silverline POS .. i need to unrig my 50hp johnson. How do i un rig the entire outboard properly. Totally clueless ... please help .

I should be more specific. I'm taking everything off the boat and junking the boat. Engine is coming off, gas tank, battery, and OMC remote. The works. I'm even stripping the teleflex steering for another boat i have. That part i get. I'm worried about messing with the linkages etc to the carb and anything else.

thanks again .. any help is great.

Disconnect the shift and throttle cables, the powerplug (the red one) .....unbolt the controller and remove.

You might have to un-bolt the motor and slide it over to un-thread the steering cable and lift motor away from the boat.

Do i do this at the engine or at the remote .. the disconnecting of the shift and throttle cables and powerplug ?

ALL of the disconnections are done at the motor end.

You will probably have to remove a few clips and hold downs but they are all done under the hood of the outboard.

Disconnect the power plug at the engine, where the big red connector is. The power and ground will be separate, but those also disconnect from the motor. Same with the throttle and shift linkages. Leave it all attached to the remote.

Word of advice, take pictures of the motor so you see where everything attached to, and how it all connects back together.

Undo the battery FIRST - you don't need battery cables arcing to the block...

Then go through with the above - all at the motor end. I prefer to re-attach all nuts & washers removed so that they are easily found and in the right places when it comes time to re-rig it.

You all better be around when it comes to rigging her back up. Took me a couple hours. First time and all. The plans for the stand in this forum worked great. Built that couple nights ago.

She needs a good scrubbing, prime, and paint. I'll replace the cover gasket as well. Cheap part. But she is top notch. Got results back from local marine shop. They said compression was 130 in #1 cyclinder and 131 in #2 cylinder. The service guy said " you got a really great old engine there. " I don't think an 1987 is that old but its not fresh. But sure does run like fresh!

Man i worked on those clips for an HOUR ! In the end i took a chisel and hacked the fiberglass around the screw holding the rubber/steel band hold downs around the cables, and just bashed with hammer until they let go. Good thing im junking the boat. What a NIGHTMARE those were.
