How to sell an Outboard As Is

Hello iboats, I'm trying to sell a 2008 200 hp E-tec. It is just a motor, and I live in an apartment, so right now the engine is on a pallet in my storage unit. I'd prefer to sell to an independent buyer as I believe this will be more money in my pocket. What is the best way for me to display this engine for interested buyers? I would assume I need an engine stand to run and prove that everything is in working order but what else will be necessary to show this engine properly? It doesn't have a wiring harness or anything that would lead to a key switch, so I'm not even sure how to start the engine once it's on the stand. Obviously I don't have a lift, so to get it on the stand will take myself and a few friends. With all this, would it be easier to just take the whole unit to a mechanic and have them look at it there? Is it possible to sell it to the mechanic or store it there and give them a cut of what I end up getting for the engine? Thanks for any and all responses

Selling it is not going to be easy without finding a way of testing it. Where are you located? Maybe there is a member close by that may be interested.

If a member is interested, only PM's - No transactions are permitted in the open forum. iBoats sells used motors.

My suggestion: do as your latter suggestion and find a marine store with a mech shop, pay the labor to have them give it a once over to ensure it runs and is saleable, then have them sell it on consignment advertised in their shop. Without your having to invest in rigging up a stand and a temporary harness/control, with the motor (hopefully) receiving the shop's "blessing," and with the traffic at a marine shop, I think you could come out ahead and get it sold quicker.

I am wondering if your engine is merely a pull start tiler handle or does (did) it have remote control unit and cables? I ask because if it was remote controlled via a wiring harness and control unit, why are they not going with the engine? When I see someone selling an engine and there is no boat anywhere, it makes me wonder about the engine. JMHO

He said it's a 200HP so it definitely isn't a pull start.

What happened to the remote? If you give us the serial number, we can figure what is needed to do a test start without a remote.

Yea, I guess I didn't see or read that part. My reading comprehension isn't what it used to be...or is it? :noidea:

Thanks for the replies everyone. The engine was purchased from government a government auction and did not come with wiring harness or controls. Everything looks clean and relatively well-maintained, but I know that means very little in the process of actually making a sale. I'll have to drive out to the storage unit to get the E-Tec S/N, but I have a 2007 Verado from the same auction with S/N 1B546651. Thanks for all the help.

BTW, I am located in Miami and I will update my profile to reflect the same.

There is a facebook group called Outboard Trader that you should definitely look into posting the motors on.

Ifs its a saltwater motor value goes down......in my area it would bring $3500-4500 if fresh water and controls.
