obviously this design is terrible.. but what can one do to NOT have to drain and re-grease this clutch assembly every couple trips out...

I've ordered 2 seals.. any ideas on sealing this thing up?

Yes. I have been able to successfully seal up my clutch pack housing so that it never gets water in there. You must use two new seals/shims and a new O-ring. I put a light coat, using my finger, of gasket sealer on the cover side where the seals/shims will touch it. Then put the two shims on the cover. Then I put another light coat of gasket sealer on the housing side, where the seals/shims will touch it. Screw the cover back on being careful not to over tighten the cover and bind the clutch pack. Basically just do it snug and recheck after your first trip out on the lake.

I use straight 30 weight oil or 80w90 gear oil in there. I have heard that either are fine and both gave me good results. Some people will pack the entire housing full of marine grease, but I never had the need.

A couple weeks ago I changed out the oil and seals on the clutch pack. The previous time I did it was 3+ years ago and many many trips to the lake. When I changed it out, there was absolutely no sign of water in the oil.
